What Are Pipe Fittings?
Pipe fittings are essential components that connect, redirect, branch, reduce or terminate piping systems in oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical and industrial applications. Every change of direction, branch connection, pipe size transition or line termination in a piping system requires a fitting — making them among the highest-volume items in any project's Material Take Off (MTO).
At Petropipe Oil & Gas, we supply a comprehensive range of ASME B16.9, ASME B16.11 & MSS SP-75 certified fittings — butt-weld (BW), socket weld (SW) and threaded (THD) ends — in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, duplex & super-duplex grades. All fittings are manufactured from seamless or welded pipe/plate material and supplied with full Mill Test Certificate (MTC) traceability.
We serve EPC contractors, procurement teams & plant maintenance departments across India — from ONGC & IOCL to private refineries & fertilizer plants. Express PAN India delivery from our Noida, Gujarat & Mumbai warehousing hubs.
Butt-Weld (BW)
ASME B16.9 — for large bore ≥½″, high-pressure & permanent piping systems.
Socket Weld (SW)
ASME B16.11 — for small bore ½″–4″, high-pressure utility & process piping.
Threaded (THD)
ASME B16.11 — NPT/BSPT threaded for low-pressure, non-welded & temp installations.
Full MTC Traceability
Heat number, chemical & mechanical test reports, NDT results on every supply.
Butt Weld
Full penetration weld — strongest joint, flush bore for smooth flow. Per ASME B16.9 for ½″ and above. Preferred for all high-pressure refinery & pipeline service.
Socket Weld
Pipe inserted into socket bore and fillet-welded externally. Per ASME B16.11 for ½″–4″. Used for small-bore utility, chemical injection & instrument piping.
Threaded (NPT)
NPT or BSPT threaded for screwed connections — no welding. Per ASME B16.11. For low-pressure air, water, instrumentation & temporary installations.
Combined Ends
Many fittings are available with mixed ends — e.g. BW one side, SW or THD other side for transition connections between pipe schedules or fitting types in the same piping system.
Types of Pipe Fittings We Supply
Elbows to end caps, tees to crosses — every certified fitting for every flow configuration in your oil & gas piping system.
ASME B16.9
Elbows
Direction Change90°, 45° & 180° (return bend) elbows in long radius (LR = 1.5D) & short radius (SR = 1D) configurations. LR elbows preferred for lower pressure drop; SR for compact layouts. Also available: reducing elbows for combined direction change & size reduction. BW, SW & threaded ends.
ASME B16.9
Tees
Branch ConnectionEqual tees (same run & branch diameter) & reducing tees (reduced branch size) for branching pipelines. Used at header branch connections, take-off points & manifold systems. Also available: lateral tees (45° branch angle) for lower turbulence in high-velocity gas lines.
ASME B16.9
Reducers
Size TransitionConcentric reducers (centreline maintained — used in vertical piping) and eccentric reducers (flat bottom or top — used in horizontal pump suction lines to prevent air pockets). Available for all standard NPS combinations. Gradual transition minimises turbulence and pressure loss.
ASME B16.9
Pipe Caps
End ClosureHemispherical or flat end caps butt-welded to the pipe end for permanent or temporary closure of a line. Used for pipeline hydrostatic testing, future tie-in points & termination of dead-end lines. Available in all wall schedules including heavy wall for high-pressure service.
ASME B16.9
Crosses (4-Way)
Four-Way BranchFour-port cross fittings for manifold headers, utility distribution & fire-fighting piping systems requiring branching in four directions from a single fitting. Equal crosses (all same bore) and reducing crosses (reduced branches) available. Note: use with caution in high-cycle pressure systems due to stress concentration.
ASME B16.11
Couplings & Half-Couplings
Pipe Extension / BranchFull couplings join two pipe sections of the same diameter (SW or THD). Half-couplings (sockolets/threadolets) are welded to a header pipe for a small-bore branch connection. Available in reducing coupling versions for two different pipe diameters. Essential for instrument nozzles & drain connections.
MSS SP-97
Branch Outlet Fittings (Olets)
Integrally Reinforced BranchWeldolet (BW branch), Sockolet (SW branch), Threadolet (THD branch), Elbolet (on elbow), Latrolet (45° lateral branch) and Nipolet (nipple with olet). Integrally reinforced — no separate reinforcement pad required. Preferred over fabricated tees for small-bore branch connections in high-pressure refinery piping.
MSS SP-83
Unions
Maintenance / Disconnectable JointThree-piece fittings (two end fittings + a nut) that allow piping to be disconnected without cutting — essential at equipment connections, pump flanges & anywhere dismantling for maintenance is needed. Available in SW & THD ends, with conical metal or flat gasket seats. ASME B16.11 Class 3000 & 6000.
ASME B16.9
Stub Ends
Lap Joint PartnerShort butt-welded pipe sections with a flanged collar, used with lap joint flanges. The stub end carries the pressure and is made of the expensive alloy material; the backing flange can be cheaper carbon steel — reducing cost in systems with alloy pipe. Type A (long pattern) & Type B (short) available.
Elbow Types & When to Use Them
Selecting the correct elbow type and radius affects pressure drop, flow velocity, space requirements and system integrity.
90° Long Radius (LR) Elbow
Most common — centreline radius = 1.5 × NPS. Gentle curve reduces pressure drop and erosion. Standard for process piping, oil & gas lines per ASME B31.3. Preferred where space permits.
90° Short Radius (SR) Elbow
Centreline radius = 1.0 × NPS. Sharper turn for compact layouts where space is restricted — offshore platforms, congested plant areas. Higher pressure drop vs. LR; not recommended for slurry or pig-able lines.
45° Long Radius Elbow
Half the turn of a 90° LR — used in pairs to create a 90° offset with lower pressure drop than a single 90° elbow. Ideal for slurry, abrasive & high-velocity fluid services. Common in pump suction piping layouts.
180° Return Bend
Full U-turn fitting — used in heat exchangers, tube bundles, fin-fan air coolers & multi-pass process equipment where flow reversal is needed. Available in LR & SR configurations, BW ends.
Reducer Selection Guide
Choosing between concentric and eccentric reducers is critical for system performance — especially at pump suctions.
Concentric Reducer
Centrelines of both ends are aligned. Used in vertical piping and where symmetrical flow transition is required — gas lines, vertical headers & balanced flow systems.
Eccentric Reducer (Flat Bottom)
One side flat — used at pump suctions in horizontal piping to prevent air pockets accumulating at the top of the pipe, which would cause cavitation. Also used at pipe racks for uniform bottom support elevation.
Reducer vs. Swaged Nipple
Reducers are BW only for ≥2″ transitions. For SW or THD small bore size reduction (½″–4″), use swaged nipples (swages) or reducing couplings per ASME B16.11.
Key Ordering Information
Always specify: larger bore × smaller bore (e.g. 12″ × 8″), concentric or eccentric, wall schedule of both ends, material grade (A234 WPB, A403 WP316L), and standard (ASME B16.9).

Pipe Fittings Manufacturing Processes
Quality pipe fittings are produced through specific forming methods that preserve material integrity under high-pressure service conditions.
Hot Forming (Seamless Pipe)
The primary manufacturing method for BW fittings. Seamless pipe is hot-formed — heated and die-pressed or mandrel-pulled into elbow and tee shapes. Preserves the continuous grain structure of the parent material, producing fittings with uniform wall thickness, excellent mechanical properties and no weld seams. Mandatory for high-pressure Class 600+ service and critical process piping.
Forging (Small Bore SW/THD)
Socket weld and threaded fittings (½″–4″) are hot-forged from bar or billet stock. The forging process produces excellent strength-to-weight ratio and tight dimensional tolerances required for socket & thread machining. ASTM A105 for carbon steel; ASTM A182 for stainless and alloy steel grades. Pressure ratings Class 2000 to Class 9000.
Fabrication (Large Diameter / Special)
For large-diameter fittings above NPS 24 or special geometries — plates or pipe sections are cut, rolled and welded (submerged arc welding) into tee and elbow shapes. Subject to mandatory radiographic (RT) and ultrasonic (UT) weld inspection per ASME B16.9 quality requirements. NDT reports supplied with every fitting.

Pipe Fittings Maintenance Best Practices
Proper inspection and maintenance of pipe fittings prevents failures, extends system life and ensures PESO & OISD regulatory compliance.
Weld Inspection
Schedule periodic visual & NDT inspection of field welds at fitting connections — magnetic particle (MT) for CS, dye penetrant (PT) for SS. UT thickness scanning at elbow outer radius (highest erosion zone) during turnarounds per ASME B31.3 inspection requirements.
Wall Thickness Monitoring
Elbows in slurry, erosive & high-velocity service experience accelerated wall thinning at the outer radius. Install UT monitoring points (CML — Corrosion Monitoring Locations) at elbow extrados and measure at each inspection interval. Retire fittings below minimum calculated thickness.
SW & THD Joint Care
For socket weld joints, ensure a 1/16″ gap between pipe end and socket bottom before welding to allow thermal expansion. For threaded joints, apply PTFE tape or pipe-thread sealant compound and confirm thread engagement depth. Retighten after first heat cycle on new piping systems.
Corrosion & Coating
Apply epoxy primer and polyurethane topcoat to CS fittings in corrosive atmospheres. For buried fittings, use field-applied heat-shrink sleeves or cold-applied tape wrap to match pipe coating system continuity. Inspect coating at each scheduled plant inspection per OISD guidelines.
